We are happy to discuss specifics with you that consider the needs of your child. Younger children typically do well with a simple explanation such as that they are going to do some “learning activities.” Every effort should be made to minimize any stress or pressure around testing. For older children (approximately fifth grade and up), parents may wish to be transparent about the purpose of the testing. It depends on your child’s age and how they cope with new situations. How should I explain the testing to my child? If you are seeking both intelligence and achievement testing, the entire process can take three hours or more. The Wechsler intelligence tests take one to two hours to administer. Testing time varies from child to child, depending on age and other factors. For preschoolers (and some Kindergartners), we use the WPPSI-IV. We use the Wechlser intelligence tests, which assess a fairly wide range of abilities, including verbal, nonverbal, processing speed, and memory. This can contribute to a sense of “high stakes” when bringing a child in for gifted testing. Retesting is complicated by the need for a certain time period to pass (often at least a year) prior to retesting in order to reduce the possibility of practice effects. Parents can sometimes be disappointed by scores or results. We do not guarantee results or that a child will be admitted into a program. If a child appears to have been prepped for intelligence testing, the results will be considered invalid and families will not be able to use the scores. The validity of the Wechsler results is based on a child having not received coaching or test preparation. Testing can open doors for highly capable children to access programs that meet their educational needs.Ĭhildren who are invested in the results may feel some stress around the testing. Most ask when they can come back for another visit! Children who are curious and enjoy challenges usually relish the novelty of the activities. Most children enjoy the evaluation process and have a positive experience. Public school appeals for entrance into advanced learning or HCC programs.
